AM and PM application order, explained by texture

Application order exists so each layer can reach skin instead of sitting on top of the last one. Texture is the only sequencing signal you need.

The rule

Apply in order of increasing weight: watery, then gel, then lotion, then cream, then balm or oil. A heavier layer applied first blocks everything after it.

The two exceptions

Sunscreen goes last in the morning regardless of its texture, because it needs to form an even film on the surface.

A leave-on acid or retinoid goes on clean, dry skin before hydrating layers, because pH and penetration matter more than weight for those categories.

A worked example

Morning: gentle cleanse, antioxidant serum, gel-cream, SPF 50. Evening: cleansing balm, low-foam cleanser, retinoid on dry skin, ceramide cream. Same four jobs, different tools.
