Product comparisons
Retinoids vs exfoliating acids: which one is your one active?
If you can only tolerate one active — and most people can only tolerate one well — this is the comparison that decides your routine.

Mechanism
Retinoids work from below, signaling faster cell turnover and supporting the look of firmness over months. Acids work from above, loosening the bonds between surface cells for an immediate smoothing and brightening effect.
Timeline
Acids show a visible difference in days. Retinoids typically show it at week eight to twelve, and often look worse before they look better as tolerance builds.
How to choose
- Visible fine lines and long-term smoothness: retinoid, low strength, two nights a week to start.
- Congestion, visible pores, oily shine: BHA, two to three times a week.
- Dullness and uneven tone with low sensitivity: AHA, once or twice a week.
- High sensitivity: azelaic acid or a retinaldehyde at very low strength, alternating nights.
Do not run both on the same night
Layered on the same evening, retinoids and acids compound irritation without compounding benefit. Alternate nights, and keep at least one recovery night per week with nothing but cleanser and moisturizer.

- Acids smooth from the surface, fast; retinoids remodel from below, slowly.
- One active, one goal, paced across the week.
- Never layer both on the same night.
